9 Tips for a Successful Long Distance Move
1. Make A Plan
Because moving long distance can be a cumbersome process, you will need to properly plan to make everything go smoothly. Contact moving companies in your area 1-2 months before your move to ask for their assistance in planning. When you plan your move properly, you will not forget anything important and the entire moving process will be much better.
2. Get A Moving Estimate
When you get an in-home moving estimate from a moving company, their representatives will come to your home to make a visual survey of everything that will be moved. They do this so that they can give you an accurate cost estimate.
If the moving company you are talking to does not want to do an in-home moving estimate, be careful. They may be a moving broker who is only booking your business and then contracting the move to a local moving company. When contacting your moving company, make sure you are talking to the moving company and not a broker.
3. Research and Find the Best Moving Company
Since not all moving companies have the best reputations, you do want to do your research to find a high quality moving company. Some online sites to check are Google, Yelp, Facebook, and movingscam.com. When you are moving long distance, more established moving companies such as United Van Lines or Mayflower are better options because they specialize in long distance moves.
4. Reduce or Downsize Your Moving
The cost of your move will be based on the weight of the items you will be moving. When preparing to move, it is a good idea to go through all your belongings and get rid of the things you don’t need. Some things you can do are hold a garage sale or donate items to the Salvation Army.
5. Write Labels on Your Boxes
It is a good idea to label your boxes when you are packing. Write down what room the box goes in and also list the contents of the box.
6. Know Your Rights
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulates all long distance moves. Their Rights and Responsibilities booklet describes exactly what the moving company’s responsibilities are and what your responsibilities are. One of the most important decision you need to make is in regards to valuation. Movers are required to provide compensation for items that are damaged or lost during transportation, but the amount of compensation they are required to offer varies significantly. Released valuation protection, which comes included in every move, only holds the moving company liable for $0.60/lb. of each item, so if a 30 lb. item is damaged you would only be compensated $18. Full valuation protection fully covers your items from moving damage, but you pay an additional fee for the increased coverage. With full valuation protection the mover will repair or replace any item that is damaged during the move. Ask your mover questions about valuation so that you know you are making the best decision for yourself.
7. Move in the Off Season
This is not an option for many people, but moving companies tend to charge higher prices during their busy summer moving season than they do during the fall, winter, and spring. If you have flexibility on your moving dates you can save yourself some money by moving in the offseason.
8. Moving Expenses are Tax Deductible
Moving costs are often tax deductible if you are moving for work. Remember to deduct your move expenses when you are filing your taxes in the spring, and you can save yourself quite a bit of money. Check out this website to learn more about what moving expenses you are allowed to deduct.
9. Get Acquainted to your New Area
One of the toughest things about a long distance move is that your new city just doesn’t feel like ‘home’. After a move you might now know many people in your new town, and you likely haven’t figured out where your new favorite restaurants are at. We strongly encourage you to push yourself to get out into your new town and experience what it has to offer. Yelp can be a great resource for finding the best restaurants in the town. Consider joining a club to meet new people. The website meetup.com can be a great resource for getting to know like-minded people in your area. You can get involved with running groups, book clubs, dining clubs, or really any other interest you may have. Take the time to get out there and get acquainted to your new city, and your new city will quickly become your own.
